As a realtor, you know that there is much more that goes into helping your clients transition to a new home than just finding the perfect place to live. You also need to provide professional support in helping them actually get there! Packing is one of the most dreaded—and necessary—parts of the moving process, and many people aren’t quite sure where to begin to tackle this massive project.

While some household items obviously need to be packed and categorized for the moving team to transport to the new home, there are also plenty of things that shouldn’t be packed—whether they are left behind or taken directly to the new home by the family. Consider the following tips for what not to pack during a household move to give your clients a head start in having a seamless relocation process: 

  • Flammables: Aerosol cans, gasoline, paint, and similar items should never be placed on a moving truck due to them being a potential hazard and fire risk. In general, these items should be properly disposed of well before moving day. Check with your local hazardous waste department to learn how to safely get rid of any flammables.
  • Food and Perishables: Cleaning out the pantry is a big step in the moving process, and figuring out what should and should not go with you to a new home is a process. Frozen food, produce, and other perishables should be eaten (or tossed) before the big day arrives, and any food that you are unable to bring with can be donated to a local food back. If you are only moving a short distance, packing a few essential items in a cooler to take directly with you to your new home is also an option.  
  • Household Plants: Did you know that some states have laws that prevent household plants from crossing state lines? Even if you are moving within your local area, some moving companies will not transport household plants. Find out all of the laws, regulations, and policies beforehand so you aren’t caught off guard, and if allowed, transport these items in your personal vehicle.  
  • Important Documents: Anything can happen during a move, and if the unexpected occurs, you don’t want to be left without your essential documents. Pack all legal documents, moving contracts, and other essentials in their own box that you keep with you at all times. That way if a mix up happens with your moving provider, you won’t be stuck without the things you need to get life sorted out in your new location.

When helping your clients decide what to pack, don’t forget to stress the importance of packing a moving suitcase! The last thing anyone wants to deal with after a long day of moving is sorting through a mess of boxes to find toiletries, clothes, and medications. Encourage the family to have a suitcase packed for each member of the family (including pets!) that includes everything they will need for the first couple days of being in their new home.
